Nick Healey presented an educational webinar, “Breaking the Code: ‘Code Words’ in Medical Staff Credentialing“ to members of the Wyoming Association of Medical Staff Services (WyAMSS), a new Wyoming organization of medical staff professionals affiliated with the National Association of Medical Staff Services (NAMSS). The presentation discussed the use of “code words” in giving and receiving physician references, and how vague references can prevent a medical staff professional from effectively providing a medical staff credentialing committee with the best information on which to make decisions. The presentation also discussed potential risk areas in medical staff credentialing and risk-reduction strategies.

Nick Healey and Mike Tracy, M.D., President of the Wyoming Medical Society, co-presented “Protecting Wyoming Patients; The Role for PSO’s” during the first annual Wyoming Patient Safety Summit in Casper to an audience of stakeholders in Wyoming’s health care industry. The educational seminar addressed the history of quality improvement organizations, legal requirements and purpose of Patient Safety Organizations (PSO’s) under the federal Patient Safety Quality Improvement Act, and how the PSO concept can be implemented in Wyoming to benefit Wyoming’s health care providers and patients. Nick Healey and Erin Murphy presented an educational webinar, “Managing Risk When Families Oppose the Donor Registry,” to various health care entities, county coroners, funeral homes and other individuals throughout Wyoming and Colorado who play a part in the organ donation and procurement process. Participants learned:
- How state donor registries are impacting donation rates in Colorado and Wyoming.
- What the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act says and does not say.
- What the UAGA’s “irrevocability clause” is and what it means.
- What puts hospitals, coroners, funeral homes and recovery agencies at risk.
- Consequences to various actors in the organ procurement process for not complying with the UAGA.
- Breaking down common indefensible positions.
